Pete the Cat and His Four Groovy Buttons wins the 2013 Missouri Building Block Award

Almost 22,000 children in the state of Missouri voted this year for their favorite Missouri Building Block Award nominee. Pete the Cat and His Four Groovy Buttons, written by Eric Litwin and illustrated by James Dean, captured over 20% of the voting with a total of 4494 votes.

It’s a Tiger! written by David LaRochelle came in second with 3200 votes. Cat Secrets by Jef Czekaj was third followed by I’m Bored written by Michael Ian Black, and The Duckling Gets a Cookie!? by Mo Willems.

Many Cass County preschoolers heard all ten nominees at branch story times and voted for their favorites. Children at Drexel selected Pete the Cat and His Four Groovy Buttons as the best book. But Harrisonville story time children selected The Duckling Gets A Cookie!? as their favorite. The children at Garden City thought It’s a Tiger! was the best.  Pete the Cat and His Four Groovy Buttons was also checked out more times by Cass County Public Library patrons than any other children’s book in 2013.

All ten Missouri Building Block Award nominees are available at each branch. Enjoy reading these fun picture books with your children.
