An update on state budget cuts for libraries

We sounded the alarm a few weeks ago about looming budget shortfalls caused by Governor Nixon’s cuts to library funds. We would like to thank everyone who shared the article on social media, called to us to express your concern and took the time to sign the petition.

Racing to Read: An Early Literacy Program

Racing to Read is a program that educates parents on early literacy skills in fun and interactive ways. Pajama Storytime has become a Racing to Read program that incorporates these early literacy skills. Beyond storytime, our children’s specialist, Ms. Sara Steinmetz, is going out and promoting early literacy in the community. She will be visiting Harrisonville Head Start and Thunderbird Apartments later on this month.

Join the Summer Reading Program, starting June 2nd

2014 Summer Reading Program is open for children and teens up to twelfth grade. This year we are learning about science as the Cass County Public Library presents “Fizz, Boom, Read!” Join us for our exciting programs that are fun for the whole family. Each branch will also have weekly storytimes with crafts and activities. Thanks to our community partners whose contributions help the library branches provide these programs.

Almost 22,000 children in the state of Missouri voted this year for their favorite Missouri Building Block Award nominee. Pete the Cat and His Four Groovy Buttons, written by Eric Litwin and illustrated by James Dean, captured over 20% of the voting with a total of 4494 votes

Dig into Reading this Summer

“Dig into Reading” is the theme for the Summer Reading Program that begins June 3rd at the Cass County Public Library. Summer fun above and below ground will be the focus of crafts, story times, and activities at the Archie, Drexel, Garden City, Harrisonville, Northern Resource Center, and Pleasant Hill branches and the CCPL Bookmobile.

The Power of Play

There are many definitions for play: to occupy oneself in amusement, to act, to pretend to be, are but a few. It is a process, not a thing. Play is different for all of us. Play helps children construct knowledge they will use for the rest of their lives. It allows them the opportunity to discover and explore the world and gives them the tools they will need to become lifelong learners.
