May is such a busy month. Mother’s Day, high school graduation, college graduation, graduation parties, kids getting out of school, school sports, and the list continues. One event that shouldn’t be forgotten or overlooked is Memorial Day, formerly known as Decoration Day. It originated soon after the Civil War as a way to remember all soldiers who died in that war. Memorial Day as we know it, is a day to remember all men and women who have died in all wars while serving in the United States Armed Forces.
Memorial Day has become an occasion for more general expressions of memory as we visit the graves of deceased relatives, whether they served in the military or not.
We also have come to know Memorial Day as a three-day weekend, picnics, swimming pools open, shopping, family get together, fireworks, the start of summer.
However you spend your Memorial Day, take time to remember the veterans who gave the greatest sacrifice – their lives – so that we could celebrate Memorial Day any way we chose.
