The destruction of some eleven towns by mostly Kansas troops under the command of Jim Lanes, Charles Jennison and Daniel R. Anthony did much to drive citizens into the guerrilla home-protection groups.
Along the way, troops scoured the countryside for horses, wagons, food, clothing, fencing and farm equipment often burning homes, crops and fields in their wake even before Order No. 11.
