Read MoreOn May 7th and 8th, I had the privilege of visiting Washington, D.C. to advocate for libraries. Since 1976, library representatives from across the country have traveled to DC to meet with their Senators and Representatives and talk about the importance of libraries.

In the pre-Internet, pre-computer days, libraries were the main and sometimes only resource in a town for in-depth information on any given subject. Back in the day of only three TV channels and no live streaming, libraries provided a valuable source of entertainment–books.
Each town struggled to maintain their own library. It was through the unification of libraries in different towns and developing a distribution system between branches that libraries began to flourish.

The Harrisonville Branch will also host a month-long exhibit of library history, including photographs, newspaper articles, stories, and more.

This year, funding for Missouri libraries faces deep cuts at both the state and federal levels. State funding, through the state library, and federal funding, through the IMLS, helps libraries provide adequate internet connections, materials, and many other services that our communities need.
